The Hannish are engorged with anguish. Swollen with misery. Walking, talking morsels of agony. Their old masters have been driven out, yes, but now something hungry drags them one by one into the shadows. It traps them in their worst memories.
And feeds.
Niala Chainbreaker means to stop it. Eight years ago, she shattered the mage empire and freed her people from bondage. Now she is desperate to save them all over again. But beneath her hero’s veneer lies a bloody secret, and the beast can taste her shame. To stop it, she may have to unearth all she’s fought to keep buried.
Brimri Mgedowu carries the blood of the fallen mage masters, but none of their magic. An halfbreed orphan exiled to the lawless islet where Hanheim discards its unwanted, she survives by swindling the men who come to gamble and whore. When violence claims her mentor’s life, she resolves to escape forever, even if it means robbing the most dangerous man in the criminal underworld.
The beast almost hopes she succeeds. Despair is sweeter with a little hope left in it. Brimri’s daring heist and Niala’s hunt for the hunter draw them both towards each other and into the path of a monster born from slavery’s dark legacy.
Neither is prepared for what it will show them.
DREADSONG takes the gritty elements of streetlife in Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn and combines them with the rigorous worldbuilding and literary exploration of racism in N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season.
